LFDW Day 1 Recap

Day 1 of LFDW kicked off in high gear with 14 designers showcasing their SS17 collection. From the romantic hues of Sisiano to the bevy of bronzed beauties that marched down the runway for Onalaja, Day 1 encapsulated LFDW’s running theme of showcasing the most innovative designs to come out of the Nigerian fashion industry.

About That Curvy Life

Spearheaded by Vanguard editor and About That Curvy Life founder, Latasha Nwugbe, the About That Curvy Life Collective showcased four different designers – Assian, Makioba, Tobi Ogundipe, and Aisha Abubakr – during Wednesday’s show. Assian, which was the only menswear designer in the collective, outfitted his models in tunic inspired shirtdresses with a tote or canvas bag to complete the look. Makioba’s jeweled take on the black and white cocktail dress was a crowd favorite and Aisha Abubakr didn’t skimp on the fringe effect in her designs. Tobi Ogundipe’s collection which featured everything from monochrome jumpsuits to the negligee-inspired cocktail dresses offered a diverse array of options for any woman about that curvy life.

Belois Couture

The Belois Couture woman is strong and in charge of her own life, at least that’s what the clothes from the designers SS17 collection signified. Dresses cinched and flared in the right places and an underlying arroyo red hue complemented this standout collection.

Divine Endowments

For Divine Endowment, the message is that sexy and casual are not mutually exclusive. Ankara pants suits and dresses dominated the runway.

DZYN

DZYN’s classic silhouette was complemented by the choice to use muted tones and floral appliques.

Kinabuti

The unique combination of sporty styles and prints made Kinabuti’s SS17 collection a favorite for anyone who is keen on combining the two.

Onalaja

Another crowd favorite, Onalaja’s golden armor like clothes exuded strength and the golden undertones of the makeup on the models complemented the Onalaja’s designs.

Rayo

In its entirety, Rayo’s SS17 collection told a unique story about a woman’s strength and her desire to portray it in different ways. The cutout dresses paired with wide-brimmed straw hats offered an interesting take traditional portrayals of evening wear.

Sisiano

Sisiano’s SS17 collection was the pinnacle of Day 1, highlighted by dusty rose hues and the promise of romance, the soft and beautiful collection took drapery and movements to a whole new level.

T.I Nathan

Clean lines and quirky tees were two of the outstanding features of T.I Nathan’s SS17 collection. Model, Kelvin Godson graced the runway in a dapper suit and bowtie.

Tokyo James

The futuristic designs (complete with metallic hues) of Tokyo James offered a new definition of fashion forward menswear.

VLISCO

VLISCO’s capsule collection with Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Loza Maléombho, and Elie Kuame combined the popular waxy prints of VLISCO with each brand’s personal aesthetic. For LDA, her penchant for glamor was not lost on the vibrant colors of the prints. Loza Maléombho’s young and flirty aesthetic merged seamlessly with the brand. Elie Kuame’s fairytale dresses were a perfect complement to the collection. 

Wanger Ayu

Wanger Ayu’s guest star, Waje was a tough act to follow, but the designer’s SS17 collection wasn’t taking a backseat to the songstress. The designer sent down models in statement pieces made to attract anyone’s attention.

Titi Belo

The Titi Belo woman is cool, calm and collected and the designers SS17 collection embodied those qualities.

Style Temple

Style Temple’s shirtdresses embellished with pearls and tassels were a crowd favorite at the designer’s SS17 show. The designer who’s collection is now available on her site was one of the most talked about collections of the night.
